When I called to book I was already just giddy and excited for our stay. Mrs Vicky was so kind. She assured me that she was going to take very good care of us. We brought drinks and sandwich fixings because we wanted to rest as much as possible. The drive was gorgeous and I can’t compare it to anything else I’ve ever seen in Oklahoma. The property is breath taking. There is no one around and nothing around which is exactly what we wanted. We we were welcomed by two giant Great Pyrenees when we arrived. Wally and Molly and they are precious. Mr Monty Joe and Mrs Vicky greeted us at the door. Sign in was easy and they were very informative of things to do and such in the area. They have tons of info and brochures for anything around and are happy to answer any questions. We stayed upstairs in the main house. There was plenty of room. 4 beds, a table and chairs, some comfy chairs, a tv, tons of movies, a mini fridge, a keurig, a bathroom with a shower and a balcony. The sunrise over the Black Mesa is just gorgeous. Sunset is just as beautiful. The dinosaur tracks are just up the road as well as a good hiking area. It’s so close to the state park and I highly suggest venturing into the park and going down the lake roads to go explore.Would be an incredible area to GeoCache for fun and we actually accidentally found one on a hike. So if you wanted to find something to do I suggest that.Stargazing is incredible! You can see a lot with your naked eye but binoculars make it even better. Just drive to the end state park and there are multiple star gazing spots. You can also just drive to the end of the road by the house and it’s so dark you can see all kinds of stars. The breakfast from Mr Monty Joe and Mrs Vicky was incredible! Huge country breakfast and there was plenty to eat. Eating family style with them was a blessing. We will be back and when we do come back we plan to visit the volcano 🌋Our lives are truly blessed from getting to come and rest at Black Mesa Bed and Breakfast. We will be thankful for meeting Mr Monty Joe and Mrs Vicky forever.Nearby activities: There is a hiking trail up the road and dinosaur footprints. The state park is very close and tons of hiking there along with some really cool hidden gems by the lake.Noteworthy details: Bring food for lunch and dinner as well as drinks. There is a propane grill you can use to cook out and the kitchen in the main house you can help yourself to the appliances in there. There is a teeny tiny diner in Kenton, OK that has a good burger. The other closest place to eat is about 30 mins away in Boise City.Get fuel before you come. There are no gas stations, convenience stores or anything around. It’s easy to take a day trip to New Mexico to see the volcano, to Colorado to see some stuff in Pueblo or Colorado Springs, you could go to Amarillo, you could also go to Kansas (but why? lol)

Having driven through this part of Oklahoma twice I knew we had to return for a stay for some dark night sky astro-photography and daytime hiking. This is a location where you are truly off the grid. There is WiFi and satellite TV but that competes with incredible scenery and weather, and some of the darkest skies in the country. The nearest gas/grocery store is at least 40 miles so you will need to bring your own food for lunch and dinner - but you have access to the kitchen and a gas grill. All rooms have a microwave and a small refrigerator. We food shopped in Guyman OK on the way, and then topped off gas in Clayton OK.There are a few options for type of room with a variety of bed arrangements, but staying in those means going outside to one of two private 'bathhouses'. We stayed in the cabin as it had its own bathroom and shower. Room was nicely furnished, comfortable, and very clean. Coffee was available with a Keurig machine and a variety of k-cups.This is a BnB so when Vickie says breakfast is at 8 sharp that means 8 sharp! And guys, if you wear one, take your hat off at her table!Breakfast is served at one table with all guests, Vickie, and Monte, her husband. An added bonus are the two dogs and 3 cats. You will be bowled over by Molly - literally. And loved to pieces by the Orange-ish colored cat. But the hosts, Vickie and Monte are the friendliest couple you may ever meet. You become part of their family as they share their house and breakfast. To allow for my night sky photography Monte was okay with turning off all outside lights. And was it dark!!We will be back!Nearby activities: Looking for the 'different'?--Very closeA dinosaur thigh boneWedding Party rock formationa 3-corner spot -- OK-NM-CODinosaur footprintshighest location in OKBlack Mesa State Park-- A day trip awayCapulin Volcano National MonumentMore dinosaur footprints near ClaytonFood & drinks: Bring your own except for breakfastNoteworthy details: Bortle 0-1 dark skies

This place is a gem and the hosts are the nicest people. It feels a bit like staying at the edge of the world, but in a good way. It’s quiet and dark and the views from the property are gorgeous. Come prepared with food, a full gas tank, and anything else you might need as there is nothing close. I have been well cared for during my stay and feel very welcome here which hasn’t always been my experience at BnB’s. Be sure to stay up late enough to look at the stars.I had the best breakfast, it is more food than you can eat, and they were even able to make me gluten free pancakes to accommodate me. The eggs are from Monty Joe’s sister’s farm and the big dogs are the best welcoming committee. Don’t be surprised if a cat jumps in your lap to say hi when you sit down.Black mesa BnB is worth much more than the reasonable prices they charge. Vicky and Monty Joe are the best hosts and work very hard for their guests so that we can enjoy their home and property. If you have a chance to visit, even just for a day, I would take it. But be a good guest and clean up after yourself and tip your hosts. This is an experience that will stay in my heart long after I am gone. Thank you Vicky and Monty Joe for having me!

I stayed here 6 years ago and I'm just now getting around to writing about it. What a gem in the rough this place is. My room was large (bunkhouse), bed comfortable, everything very clean. Vicki is a super lady as is all of her family. This is the very kind of business I like to support. They give you great service, a great product at an affordable price. The bathroom was shared so if you are not comfortable with that, well, get over it. There are not a lot of rooms so sharing the bath is no big deal. I will definitely be back some day!

If I could give more stars, I would! I’ve never stayed at a mom and pop bed and breakfast, but this place was a GEM! I stayed in the Upper Room and it was so cute. Vicki, the owner, was worried I wouldn’t enjoy my stay because the bathroom was outside, but I loved it. The place was super clean and comfortable. The owners are also incredibly hospitable (even their outside doggies and kitties). Vicki’s breakfast was delicious!! I think I may dream about her prickly pear syrup the rest of my days! Also, the scenery of the bed and breakfast is gorgeous and very close to the trailhead for the black mesa summit. Can’t recommend this place enough!

Vicki and Monty are wonderful hosts and keep a warm and comfortable ranch in one of Oklahoma's best kept secrets, Black Mesa country. If you love looking at the stars, there are few places on the planet where you will see the night sky more clearly. In my opinion the view is comparable to Phantom Ranch in the Grand Canyon. My wife and I stayed one night on our way to Denver and we hiked the Black Mesa trail early the next morning. We have already decided we will return for a longer stay to properly explore the area.

I literally stopped by in hopes that the owners would be able to provide a room at the last minute on a Sunday afternoon. Monty Joe and Vicky pulled in behind me and although they were just returning from a long morning in Boise City, they were gracious enough to take myself and my dog in for the night. Monty Joe and Vicky are the most lovely people and they run a fantastic B and B. The rooms are clean and well appointed. They have a wonderful group of friendly cats and dogs. There is a delightful balmy breeze to relax and enjoy the quiet. And ...yes Vicky made an absolutely delicious breakfast! This is the perfect place to begin your day when hiking the Ok high point. They are located maybe 3 miles from the trailhead. After my stay at the Black Mesa Bed and Breakfast I left thinking how lucky I was to meet these two amazing people and also find a beautiful and safe place to stay for the evening.

We stayed at the Black Mesa for three nights, and it was the most wonderful, relaxing, rejuvenating experience. Monty Jo and Vicki are such wonderful hosts, and their breakfasts are incredible! Monty makes the very best biscuits and Vicki makes a prickly pear jelly and syrup that is so wonderful. If you need a break from everything and to be immersed in the glory of God's beautiful creation this is the place to go. You can completely unplug and be blissfully absent from the day to day grind of news, as there is no broadcast television. They do have a wonderful array of DVD's so you can watch movies! I suggest bringing a good book and sitting out on the porch and enjoying the peace and quiet! There is also the Black Mesa to hike, as well as plenty of empty roads to walk on if you aren't as adventurous. Traffic is so light and you can hear a car coming for miles! All in all it was one of my most favorite places I have ever visited!

This is a beautiful place to stay! We stayed in the Sunrise cabin. There is a little private picnic table just for you right outside of it. It is cozy and clean and they have plenty of cool dogs and cats around the property to see or pet.The hosts are Vicki and Monte and are warm and wonderful! Monte makes superb blueberry pancakes and Vicki makes the sweet prickly pear syrup to top them. There are gorgeous sunsets and the stars are abundant and breathtaking, since the night sky here is one of the darkest in the USA. Hike the 8.5 miles to the highest elevation in Oklahoma but bring more water than you think you need and take a short walk to see dinosaur footprints. This is the perfect place to unplug and enjoy a simpler lifestyle! We highly recommend it!

We live in the city and wanted to make our fifth anniversary a weekend away from everything. We were a bit skeptical about how remote this place is. But when we got there Vicki and Monty understood and took very good care of us. The breakfast is amazing, they are great host and could not have made us feel more welcome. We chose this place because of the darkest skies and the ability to see the constellations, we got so much more. We will go back in August when the sky is clearer. Thank you guys for making us feel so welcome:

Stayed with my family at the Black Mesa Bed & Breakfast. These are great people. They love the Lord and it shows in the way they run their business. The room was nice and the breakfast was great. We were run off the Mesa by lightning, so watch the forecast. It cleared up before dark and the night sky cannot be described. It has to be experienced. For best results go on a new moon. If you are going to Colorado and want to break up the trip, this is the best place to go. It may add a few hours, but it is totally worth it. Great place to go as a family for a quick weekend trip.

Owners Vicki and Monty Joe are so nice. So are their ranch dogs Wally and Molly (hope I have that right). And the many cats. This is a very quiet place, far removed from the city. Rooms are comfortable and clean. I stayed to hike Black Mesa on my way to Colorado. If you are researching the area, I very much recommend it. The important stuff: Wifi works great and there's a pretty good AT&T signal out here, even on top of Black Mesa.

Monty Joe and Vicki were awesome hosts. We loved the breakfasts and the fellowship, and the cabin was amazing, as well as immaculately kept. As a bonus, the dogs and cats were all friendly, and helped with missing our own pups (many pets were given). The area has amazing views amd a ton of history, and the Tri-State marker is a short 15 minutes away, and some dinosaur tracks are half that. We definitely will be coming back to visit.

Our first stop on our vacation and truly just needed a place to stay for the night. We found a true treasure in the middle of nowhere! The sunset over the mesas was awe inspiring, but then the stars came out and WOW!! You can see the milky way from the balcony! All of it! A million stars! So then after our stay, which was lovely, we were treated to a true country breakfast! a breakfast egg casserole, fresh biscuits, bacon, juices, coffee and country gravy. The hosts are precious, older people who used to be cattle farmers on that land. Their home is filled with family photos and be prepared to chat. You'll feel like you're visiting relatives. We want to go back and bring our daughters!

Amazing place in the middle of nowhere with beautiful, scenic views and starry-filled night skies. Monty and Vicki are so sweet and the most hospitable hosts! Deliciously prepared breakfasts and homey, but spacious rooms with super comfy beds, and delightfully decorated and clean bath houses. Definitely a must stay and will be returning again!

7th year wedding anniversary tripI had such a memorable time here with my wife and 1 year old daughter. We stayed 2 nights at the sunrise cabin. Everything about the cabin was great. Inside and outside was spot on. The views from the cabin are amazing. You can see the sunrise and sunset from outside the cabin. It's so peaceful out here and quiet. The location is close to perfect. The clear night skies are something to see for yourself!Monty and Vickie are amazing hosts. They are the definition of hospitality. They gave my wife and I a anniversary gift upon departure. They will treat you like family. Easy to get along with and talk to. They make great breakfast too! WiFi is fast for being out from civilization! I definitely recommend this place if you are ever in the area. I'll be coming back for sure!

I stayed here in August of 2013. It was a wonderful overnight stay. The breakfast the next morning was amazing! The hospitality and friendliness of this couple was top notch! They were also extra gracious to me because I am in full-time ministry and they love blessing pastors and missionaries. I highly recommend this bed and breakfast!

We stopped at Black Mesa Bed and Breakfast for some breakfast on our way to the trail. Vicki was so kind and hospitable during our short visit. She made us a wonderful meal consisting of bacon, eggs, pancakes and homemade syrup. If you're in the panhandle, you won't want to miss out on this quaint abode.Q&M

Me and my sister planned to camp at black mesa state park. We showed way underprepared. One blanket for 20° weather. Around 2am,concerned for the safety of me and my sister (fyi hypothermia can set it 30°) decide it would be better to find somewhere warmer to stay. Quick google search found this BB. Luckily Vicki answered our call and welcomed us in at 2am! In addition to a warm bed we were provided breakfast. Near death experience saved by this bed and breakfast. Also super adorable dog greeters. Wonderful people!

Attention High Pointers! This is the place to stay if you are hiking Black Mesa. Vickie and Monty were fantastic hosts. It is only 3 miles to the trail head and by far the best place to stay in the area. Great breakfast and Vickie helped us out by getting up a little earlier to feed us so we could make our flight in Denver.

Friendliest people ever. I had planned to stay in Clayton the night before hiking up Black Mesa. When I saw the sigh, I gave myself a dope slap for not thinking of B&Bs. Well, as luck would have it, Black Mesa was full (it is lovely so not unexpected) and the owners graciously called a friend who had room at her B&B. How nice was that! So the western Oklahoma hospitality was in full force that evening. And that made my experience so wonderful. I want to go back just to stay with the owners at Black Mesa.

We stayed here just to hike Black Mesa in November of 2012. Next time we will return just to stay there! The host were wonderful, the lodging was unique and wonderful. The breakfast was outstanding. The homemade biscuits & home made prickly pear jam was phenomenal!

We stayed Dec 31st 2013-Jan 1st 2014 The hosts, Vicki and her husband were incredibly gracious and she is a great cook. Expect traditional fare for breakfast, all homemade. My youngest didn't know what to do with blueberry pancakes that had actual blueberries in them.Their local knowledge of the area was fantastic. We had the Family Suite. (I think it was called that.) It was the room above the main house. With an interior and exterior entrance it was great for late night star gazing. There was grace before breakfast and while religious people nothing was overwhelming. The room had modern beds with home made quilts, Dish TV and free Wi-Fi.If you are going there you surely have a reason but I can say that being able to show my wife and kids the Milky Way galaxy and a true Dark Sky was worth the trip alone, not to mentions the view from the top of Black Mesa. They have hyper friendly dogs and cats and our Standard Poodle got along with everyone.

Excellent Service. Very homely environment. Vicky, the owner, and other members of her family were super friendly. So were, Even their pets. Do keep yourself updated about the weather forecast before going. Clear sky and dark place will let you enjoy beautiful Milky way galaxy.
