I had entirely new decking and shingles put on a multi unit property a little over a month ago.I'll start by saying the roof work was done well. The crew was very good at cleaning and everyone was very professional.However there where a number of issues with the contract and fine print. We signed a contract for a new shingled roof, new decking, new gutters, a drip edge, and a few other things (water barrier etc).Now I was under the impression they where going to install a drip edge and connect a new gutter system to it but they did not put either of those in and they used our old gutters. They refunded us "the value of the gutters" but just jargoned us about the decking being the drip edge.Even though we didn't talk about installing fascia I pointed out the areas that were bad and was told we will make it look good. The old roof just had shingles that bent over the front and back of the roof and that was fine. SCR&E just left exposed decking that you can see the neon green edge of from the front and back of the house.The guy who was in charge while the crew was working told us we would have to hire a contractor or carpenter to clean that up but I thought the "exteriors" part of the company title would have covered that.All in all I just feel like it was a rushed job that, because it was the end of the season, they were just trying to finish fast. After talking to the company and explaining this issue they took off a small percentage for the gutters but would not negotiate any further. For what we paid I feel that the work does not match the price. The companies tag line is even about how they cost more but the work is better.If you are going to consider this company please make sure you go over exactly what you want, what each item costs, and make sure the contract clearly states everything. I would recommend having a contract lawyer look at the document as well before you sign.

I was so disappointed by this company. I had scheduled a quote for tuckpointing and a flat roof repair/replacement for our condo association. I found this company on Google and the reviews seemed very promising. I called on 4/18 and scheduled with Mark to come out at 3:30 on 4/24. on 4/24 At 3:50pm my neighbor messaged me that Mark was not on site and did not respond to her text. I called & Mark stated he totally forgot however he could be on site in 30 minutes. Totally understood these things happen- no problem. My neighbor walked him through the job of tuckpointing our 3 story building and the roof. Mark stated this was going to be 50,000-70,000 but he would give us a proper proposal via email. This # seemed really high but I was interested to get the break down as it is a lot of work. I have called weekly since then and each time I am told Mark is going to get right back to me- I will get a call same day and I never get a return call from Mark or the staff. The staff at the main number are very nice and helpful- but is this the service we will get for a 50,000+ job?? Total waste of my time and patience.

Second City has been my go to for many years and projects. Wrought Iron, not aluminum, fence was first. The latest being concrete in backyard and my new walk-in shower is simply awesome. If the quote sometimes seems a but higher than others, remember one gets what one pays for. The work and contractors are superb with great tips of info. Ed and Dennis are great to work with. Maggie is awesome and sets a great tone with her first-impression customer service skills. If work is required around your castle, call the best, Second City 👍🏾👍🏾 you will not regret it if the best is what you're seeking

Our condo association at 1532 N Claremont ave in Wicker Park voted to hire Second City Roofing & Exteriors to re-shingle and re-flash our buildings deteriorating roof. After reaching out to multiple contractors (some even a little less expensive) We decided to go with Second City simply due to the fact that they came off as EXTREMELY reliable, friendly, and guaranteed that the job would be done quickly and effectively.Ed Baker, the founder or Second City has a team of roofers that to be quite honest are the best in the business. It's worth the small premium to know that your work is in good hands, and won't require any additional maintenance after the fact. My wife and I own a typical Chicago 2 flat with a flat roof.We received several estimates from potential local licensed and reputable roofing companies to replace our flat roof. I felt most comfortable with Second City because of Mark who walked the job with me and submitted his proposal and contract because I was impressed by his expertise and experience. We decided to hire them.Second City was no where near the cheapest quote we received, but since a complete tear off and replacement of our flat roof is a very important and expensive project, we wanted to hire a very reputable and professional company.This is when the problems started.We spent $14,200.00 to, unfortunately, receive a project that lasted more than 2 months to complete- with little to no supervision, multiple problems, constant no-call no-shows by the crew (that had nothing to do with any weather related issues) on specifically scheduled work that I had to make myself available for, and an owner that could not care less, and was more than arrogant and rude to me on multiple occasions.Ed Baker, the President and Owner himself, personally scheduled a final walk thru meeting with me which I appreciated and agreed to. Even Ed himself didn't show up, without even a courtesy call, to his own scheduled meeting that he set with me. I re-arranged my calendar for this meeting. When I called him to ask his time of arrival (I figured he was running late) he immediately cursed and swore at me, then yelled at me thru the phone stating that he was sick of sending his crew to my property to fix their mistakes, and asked me if I would rather him speak to me this way in person face to face, and then said he was going to place a lien on our building.I received a lien release after this horrendous and insulting conversation from him and still wonder why he would ever threaten and treat a customer who spent so much money with Second City this way, and who was always available and flexible for their repeatedly missed appointments to continue their roof replacement project.I am not only left speechless to this day, but more importantly my wife and I are ashamed that we hired this company.

They redid the roof a few years ago and it was great. Recently we experienced a leak and Second City had someone at the house that evening to look at it. The next day they were on the roof making the repair. They even had someone come in to fix the water damage on the ceiling, and they did an excellent job. I could not be happier with this experience. Second City stands by their work, are helpful, and responsive. They do a fantastic job.

About ten years ago Second City helped us with installation of great quality windows. We needed their services again. I called booked an in home free estimate. Well they never showed up nor called. My husband called to see what happened and they were apologetic. We understand things happen that throw schedules off but a simple phone call would help. Not good to feel dismissed. We live in a 3-flat condo building in the city of Chicago and were in need of a roofer to address issues that were causing visible water damage inside. We called out 4 roofing contractors and found Second City to be the best. They came out within days of our call during the busy/heavy spring rain and flooding week in Chicago. And, their analysis was on par with the others we had received (i.e, they didn't suggest any unnecessary work and told us our roof had another 5-8 years of life). We appreciated that they stuck to the issue at hand. They offered us three different estimates for three levels of service and offered excellent warranties on the latter two options. We opted for the mid-range level of work. They scheduled around our availability to work from home and were done in two days. Their customer service was also great - they followed up to see if we had questions on the estimates and after the work was finished, they scheduled around us and were able to get the work done quickly. The price was in line with others, if not slightly less. We feel comforted by their service and with the warranty.

We recently had our roof redone by Second City. We cannot say enough good things about the owner, foreman and this company. They were professional and very polite. They're bid was competitive with other companies but what sold us was their promptness in communication during the bidding phase. The whole job took a total of 3 days to complete. They cleaned up every single bit of debris at the end of each day. They protected our shrubs, trees, etc. We had a couple flat landscape stepping stones that cracked during the three days and they replaced the cracked ones on top of the six non-cracked ones on their own free will. In addition, they went around and recalked the interior part of every skylight in our house. We recommended Second City already to a handful of friends and would highly recommend them to anyone reading these reviews.

I Emailed Second City on a monday night with what I needed done . Tuesday morning I received a call from Ed Baker. After speaking with Ed, he told me I can have someone their in an hour. Luis showed up and we talked. I felt very comfortable with him. I called luis on a couple of occasions with questions and he either picked up right away of called me back within the hour. the crews that did the work were respectful of my neighbors and friendly. I reccomend Second City to anyone that needs work done on their house

Excellent service and price. I live nearby and Steve came to my house and gave a very competitive estimate. A complete tear off and reshingle was completed in a half a day a couple of weeks ago. I am very happy with the work and the price. I wouldn't hesitate calling Ed and the gang again.

After a couple of estimates, 2nd City won the contract and we couldn't be gladder for it. Steve Z was communicative and thorough making sure we were happy with the timeline and the work. Turned into a bigger job that anticipated but that didn't stop them from finishing on time and my new roof looks great. You know when you're dealing with quality contractors when they won't offer to tack a new roof onto your old roof. Sure it's cheaper but the extra weight and assumption that the old work is 'good' isn't a good business model. They ripped out 5 layers of old roof and a layer of cedar shake before laying down new underlayment and then 30lb felt before finishing out with architectural shingles. Glad I went with 2nd City as another layer of roof might have caved the ridge on the house.

Second city did a complete tear down and installation of a new roof in a little over two days, they did a custom gutter job ( I only needed pieces replaced) , and even helped pull all the ivy off my house while they were up there! Super clean and friendly! I would reccommemd them and hire again!

I really tried to give these guys another chance, but come to find out their marketing far outruns their actual capabilities.If you have a small job perhaps they might be a good fit, but for serious work, you'll want to look elsewhere to a serious contractor.Numerous missed callbacks, excuses, and clearly no internal communication between employees.Update: After seeing this review Second City called me citing that as a reason they didn't bid/call me back on the project. As a result of this the caller even had the audacity to state that them not bidding was a way of getting "even" for my 1 star review.Thanks Second City, but I think you've done me a favor.

I own a commercial retail property in the City Of Chicago. I am receiving a partial SBIF grant from the city to improve the building. With this grant i have to hire professional companies that are licensed in the City of Chicago and insured. I hire the companies pay them for the work they do then i get reimbursed from the city. So i come to angles list and start setting up appointments with a bunch of companies and have them come out. Second City being one of those companies. I called them set up a appointment. The estimator came out i explained to them what i need and told him i need, actually i must, use a professional company to do any work on my building and everything needs to be done right. Also that any work that Second City roofing thinks needs to be done i want it done. My building needs Masonry work, tuck pointing and partial roof tear out. After the estimator comes out takes measurements etc a couple weeks pass and i don't hear anything. I contact them and ask whats going on and i get passed around the office and was told once they get in touch with the estimator i will be contacted and updated. Well guess what i never received a call back. Couple more weeks pass and i tell myself what the heck they have a good reputation and the estimator seemed honest let me try giving these guys the benefit of the doubt. I call the office again and the secretary gave me the estimators number. I call him and tell him who i was and he tells me o the office does want to do your work because its a insurance job. I told him no its not a insurance job like i told you in person i pay you guys and i get reimbursed from the city and you have nothing to do with the city i just need a company thats licenses and reputable to do the work. The estimator says ok let me come out again and see the property. He comes out and meets with my business partner for not even 5 mins and told him ill email the estimate in a couple of days. A couple days go by and still nothing, i call the estimator and he's like it should have been sent out and i gave it to the office text me your email ill make sure you get it. I text him my email and also told him my relative owns a building that needs similar repair done and that he should contact him if they're interested. Days go buy and no email or call back. i called him back twice and i still haven't gotten a answer.I have gotten 3 bids so far and each bid is around $80,000-$100,000. It seems like Second City is too good for a job like this or they can't handle it. Either way they are very unprofessional and i suggest calling any of these companies below, all these companies below have been helpful and professional along the way.
