I am not one to normally leave negative reviews....but Shield is a massive disappointment. People need to know how unprofessional and unskilled they are.We hired them in 2022 to change several lentils, tuck-pointing and general repairs to our brick 3 flat. Sam made all sorts of promises and guarantees and failed to come through on any of it.After the contract was signed and the deposit was paid it all went bad. There was immediate pressure to begin the work early, before we were ready....after we originally agreed to start the job around a specific time, several weeks later.I was told the job should take about 3 weeks....they finished in 1 week. Normally when a job goes fast you should be happy, right? Well, they clearly rushed through everything. There were no safety precautions taken, no clean up, no care to any of their work. Part of the agreed job was to seal the entire front of the building....that part was ever even attempted.Once the job was done, they demanded payment on the spot. There was no time to examine the work or ask questions. The entire property was left a mess....including inside where they needed access to water and electricity.After a couple of weeks we had water seeping through the windows and walls....actually worse than before they did the work. I contacted them to come have a look and make the necessary repairs. It took 3-4 weeks to come out....and they spent about an hour "caulking". Caulking was not what needed to be done....just an extremely cheap solution to make it look like they were doing something. This happened 2 additional times.I am tired of asking them to come back out to make repairs becaise it's a massive waste of time and will just end in disappointment. I have asked Shield to reimburse part of job and they refused. They will be hearing from attorney soon.

Sam promptly scheduled an appointment to look at the project, which was to completely tear out and redo our sunken patio. We wanted to get rid of all the old loose tile on the walls and floor, and replace it with brick walls (to match the building) and a concrete floor. We discussed the options, and he got back to us quickly with a very reasonable quote.The demo alone was a big job that required removing all tile, prepping the walls, breaking up and removing the old concrete, and disassembling the iron railing.He provided good communication throughout the process and did a good job of coordinating the concrete, masonry and welding teams during demo and construction.Everybody who worked for him on the project was friendly, professional, and did very good work.The final results turned out great and exceeded our expectations.

There were violations in the repair of the exterior wall and chimney of our building. Many masonry companies estimate price was very expensive because the repairs required drawings . Until we found this company, from drawings , permit to repairs , they are very professional and Sam is very good communicator. Although there were some omissions in the repair process, he corrected it in time. Thank you very much. It is a company worth trying.

I was really impressed with Shield. We had a leak in our attic, which they determined was caused by our chimney that needed flashing and masonry repair. They came out to fix it that same week and cleaned out the gutters while they were on site. I would highly recommend them!

Bad Experience: We hired Shield Masonry & Roofing Inc. to repair our condo building roof and build a new Trex deck on top of it. Their work was so poor that we have to do the whole project over again.The main issues with the deck Shield installed are 1) it wasn’t built to code even when our contract specifically mentioned it needed to be, 2) the deck boards were not installed correctly where someone could be injured and 3) the deck was built with a cheaper Trex material than agreed to.When we raised these issues, Shield was dismissive. They should have done the work right the first time, they didn’t. They should have redone the deck, they didn’t. They proposed a stopgap solution of building a wood railing that only addressed one of the three issues and would’ve damaged our masonry.We withheld remaining payment on account of the defective work and requested a refund. Shield refused. More of the same, their work was defective and their practices deceitful.Hiring Shield was a costly mistake.

The Shield team did a great job on our rear roof, which needed a tear off. Work was done on time as promised and at a reasonable fee. They did a great job cleaning up after and were professional and courteous. They also fixed another issue on another portion of roof the same day as the main roof.

Unfortunately the work done by Shield Masonry was absolutely inadequate and unprofessional. While we felt good about Sam and team upon our initial meetings, the work that was done was not only in violation of Chicago city code, but also hazardous. There are some active leaks in the top 2 units after they installed the roof and we are unable to see where it's stemming from because they never allowed us to even inspect the roof coating/membrane before they did the roof deck installation.Now to the roof deck. Sam told us we were able to pick any trex we'd like (according to him, all grades would cost us the same, this is in writing), so we obviously picked the highest grade. They installed the lowest grade, and he kept denying it even after we showed him the stickers that were still on the trex boards. Ok fine, we could live with that if the installation was done correctly but it was incompetently done meaning, yes, a year later we're complaining because we were finally able to get a few different contractors out to give their assessments after noticing some of the trex boards were not aligned correctly and didn't have support underneath and if you put your foot there, it would cause serious injury. Some boards are warping upwards because they aren't installed correctly. The flaw that stuck out and was immediately brought to their attention was that the roof deck was raised much higher than the original deck thus making it a violation of Chicago city code by being over 6in higher. His solution was to put some gaudy wooden fence around instead of addressing the real problem. Upon inspection by other contractors, they also mentioned that they slid in some pieces of wood underneath the roofdeck to help prop it up, which we noticed, but then were told that weight on the deck would eventually cause the small pieces of wood to pierce the roof membrane and eventually could cause leaks as the roof would be unprotected.Sam keeps mentioning we owe them his remaining balance but we will not be bullied into giving them anymore money after we found out this whole project needs to be scrapped and redone from scratch and will cost us even more. Even the materials are not salvageable.We had a recent call with Sam to request a refund, we know this is far fetched but we were done wrong by his company and felt it to be a reasonable ask even if it was 75-80%, before taking other measures like legal action and reporting to the BBB. On the call, he said a refund was not possible but to make things right, he would forgo the remaining balance and redo all the work with proper permits and to reinstall the deck to code. That's something our HOA was potentially considering but now he's stopped responding and this review had to go up so hopefully no one else gets into a dire situation that we've found ourselves in with Shield Masonry.Just be careful working with Sam and team, he can talk but can't deliver.

Great service and quality.Sam was prompt and clear with his communication and he is always happy to answer our questions throughout the engagement. He kept us in the loop of the job progress and provided us with options and suggestions. His crew was professional and handled everything with care and they did a good job cleaning up after the job. They also went ahead and did more than the initial job quoted without charging us more.We look forward to see them back in the spring time for more brick work inside our house! We recommended Sam to our neighbors too.

Sam was my contact at Shield. He was professional, communicative, proactive and thorough from start to end. His team was always on time and they worked hard to exceed timeline expectations which they did. Sam made helpful suggestions and was always willing to listen and respond to all my questions. Our new roofs and deck was completed timely despite finding lots more rotten wood than we had hoped. I greatly appreciate Sam and his team were very conscientious and careful throughout the project and everything was left clean and to our satisfaction. Definitely recommend them.

DO NOT USE! They did not build our roof to code, didn’t correctly put the trex in (it is popping out and doesn't seem it was secured correctly), and used a lower quality material than what we actually paid for. When we confronted them about the wrong material they didn't admit that they used the lower quality material until we showed the sticker with the material type name that they left on the material itself. Our building will need to redo the work, costing our building tens of thousands of dollars to fix. They also used our building in their advertising even though it was done wrong. They will not refund us the money and we can’t trust that they would do the work correctly a second time.

Sam and his team did an amazing job with a number of projects at our house. We had a punchlist of several masonry and roofing-related items that needed to be taken care of after we bought our house, including rebuilding part of a concrete walkway, tuckpointing brick walls, replacing a termination on a flat roof, and sealing masonry / walkways. Sam's team handled of this work in a professional manner with great communication, including answering all of the questions that we had upfront, and following up after a couple months to finish some work that could not be initially completed. We're looking forward to working with Shield again in the future.

I contacted this company on a recommendation of a neighbor. My chimney needed to be repaired, bricks replaced and tuckpointing.Sam came out the next day to conduct an assessment and estimate. We agreed on cost and we were able to get scheduled quickly for repair. They completed the job as promised and provided photos of the completed work.Easy to work with!

The Shield guys have done two jobs for us. The first was tuck pointing our building and the second was concrete work and garage floor replacement. Both were done professionally and quickly for a reasonable cost. I appreciate that they came in, did their work completely, and cleaned up after with no drama or pressure to add work. Paid Shield to install 2 skylights and a light tube. After patiently waiting for weeks beyond the scheduled install date, they install 1 of the skylights and the light tube in the completely wrong location. We were very clear on where we wanted them, and this a complete screw up on the part of Shield's crew. Not wanting to patch huge swaths of our roof, we paid the materials (Shield comped the labor) for a 3rd skylight. However, despite buying extra parts (on our own dime) we cannot get the light tube properly located. (And I don't mean they were off by inches - they missed the mark by an entire ROOM!) Run away from this company for any skylight install.
