We did not stay in the rooms so i could not comment, but i assume it would be similar to Island Inn, the other of the two lodging places on the island. So are the restaurants, Monhegan House and Island Inn restaurants. After the boats left and the island became quiet, these two places where people gather. So we alternated between them. The food is fantastic. Not like other tourist places, where they lock you in and start price gauging, on this island, people are nice and business is fair. We expected higher price because on the island everything costs a little more. They need to ship over vegetables, meat, fish and even water. but relatively price here is reasonable and the portion is not stingy. on top of that, the food is delicious.

Our experience on the island would not have been the same if we stayed anywhere else. Breakfast and Dinner being included in the room rate and being of such high quality and served by an incredibly professional staff was an amazing perk for a remote island with limited supplies. Our room with two windows and a view of the ocean was comfortable. The shared bathroom facilities were clean with a good design of individual rooms creating privacy. We will be staying at Monhegan House again in the future.

This place is so nice that I didn’t want to write a review because I want to keep it a secret. But after seeing a recent negative one, I felt like I should. I adore this place. My fiancé and I just stayed here for 4 days and I will think about it for the rest of my life. The staff was lovely. The inn keepers were kind and fostered a sense of community (even if we were only here for a few days). At night, you could fall asleep to the sound of the waves and enjoy the almost complete darkness of the town. It was like some fairy tale dream. I am usually afraid of shared bathrooms/ showers but these were very clean and setup for maximum privacy. The bed was comfortable and the blankets were nice. And lastly, the food was amazing. Like we were so impressed with every dinner we had. Breakfast was straight forward and the coffee was good. I can’t wait to come back.

The place is historic for sure, and I think it's part of the throwback experience to have bathrooms and showers separate from the rooms. But that's where the positives stopped. We had a horrible meal, with three of our four dishes horribly botched and a front of house team that was in over its heads. And all this after having to stand and watch for 30 minutes, when we had a set reservation time.Between the foul-smelling tuna tartare, a grossly undercooked pork chop (raw in the middle), and a very dried-out, over-cooked piece of fish, we didn't even stay for dessert. We were scheduled to stay for two nights. We took the next morning's ferry and declined to even try the breakfast we had paid for. Never going here again.Rooms: Expect the bare minimum. Expect to hear every noise outside your door and windows, too.Food & drinks: Dine elsewhere.

As long as you are aware that the rooms are very simple without private bathrooms you will be fine.Loved our stay, good food and quite friendly atmosphere.Idk if I would recommend for young families. Just isn’t focused on the kid demographic.Nearby activities: Hiking, several beer and food options. Coffee roasted on the island.Food & drinks: Local Brewery and Food truck was very good.

I have been to Monhegan Is. many times and this is the best lodging. Holden and Sue are the innkeepers, they go above and beyond to make your stay pleasurable and memorable. Breakfast and dinner are included in the rack rate. The menu is eclectic and the food superb. Thanks to all for another amazing experience!!Food & drinks: Breakfast and Dinner included with the room rate. Fabulous meals. Great value!!

This Inn simply could not be more charming. Excellent service and beautiful furniture and too many nice touches/details to begin listing. Breakfast and dinner are INCLUDED in the price of the room. Dinner was simply stunning. We got a bit carried away with the appetizers, as they are unlimited for guests (remember to pay gratuity separately!) and still managed to appreciate (if not quite finish) the main courses, both of which were excellent. My boyfriend isn't really a fish guy but he was feeling adventurous and ordered the Branzini, which we both loved. Also, it’s BYOB, so remember to grab a bottle of wine or whatever you fancy from the nearby general store. We’re from DC, where the dinner alone would probably have cost around the same price as the room, which of course INCLUDES dinner and breakfast along with the room. Breakfast wasn’t quite as extravagant as dinner – it generally isn't – but very good nonetheless. The lemon poppy seed muffin was outstanding, as was the frittata and coffee and home fries, etc.As there are only a couple restaurants/hotels on the island, you may expect the kitchen to phone it in a bit, but it was actually the opposite. I would have been blown away by the food if I'd eaten it in any city in the world. It was truly a magical, unforgettable weekend. Very nice, competent people working there. Friendly and charming and very knowledgeable about the menu and the island and anything else you'd want to know about. Very friendly, interesting guests as well. Easy to meet people on the huge wrap-around porch, which is a lovely place to converse or have a drink or snack.I should probably point out that wifi is pretty weak throughout the building, but I am reluctant to do so because everything else was so, so perfect. But you may want to consider the wifi issue if you hope to work remotely. We are already looking forward to our next trip. Thanks so much, guys!!

Nice experience here with a group for a spring birding trip. I thought the food was very good. There were some vegetarian options that could have easily been made vegan. Just be aware that it may be more rustic than some folks like with shared bathrooms. Those who complain about food prices in their reviews are probably not accounting for the expense of operating on an island where all supplies must be brought in by boat.

So you definitely have to know what you are signing up for-the rooms are very simple and you have shared hallway bathrooms-but if this is fine with you then the Monhegan House is a great home base while you experience the island. I loved how the House made me feel like I was almost traveling to last century Maine and it was lovely to learn about the history of the house. The whole place is ruthlessly clean. During our stay we had dinner (one of the best ribeyes I've had in a while) and breakfast (by far the best blueberry pancakes I've ever had!) and the morning coffee was nice. The value for your money is great and we will certainly be returning!

Our first stay at the Monhegan House was so lovely and delicious we stayed two extra nights. Everyone we interacted with was welcoming, and staffers Alex and Vivian were both especially gracious. Dinners were on point. Really quite impressed with the whole dinner menu (especially in the days of supply chain headaches!). Extra thanks to the dessert & pastry chef who helped kick off our summer with rhubarb from the garden. Thanks, Holden & Sue and crew, for making an already special stop on our trip even better than expected.

I return here in September each year. Friendly hosts, very clean place, good food, great ocean view from the cozy private room. Private bathrooms are just down the hall. Each bathroom is in a separate room. Once the door is shut there is complete privacy and enough bathrooms to accommodate a full house. No elevator, but the hosts carry your baggage to your room and I prefer the top floor as is has the best view. There is a fridge in the hall, free breakfast and wifi. The hiking trails have the most beautiful views of the rugged coast I've seen in Maine.

Just had a two night stay here with my partner and it was excellent. It's a cute and quaint New England inn with basic yet very comfortable rooms. It may not have every luxury in the world...but if that's what you wanted, Mohegan is the wrong Island. The included breakfasts and dinners were great, my partner and I don't eat meat, so It was nice to see that there were vegetarian offerings at every meal...although we opted for seafood at dinner! Hoping to return here soon!

Spent a magical weekend there. No locks on the doors, great guests. This is a front porch, board games, no TV, glass of wine at days end kind of place.Rooms: They have beds and that’s all you’ll need. Very basic New England island accommodations but immaculate.Nearby activities: Nite nite fattys for cake is the go to activity. The little non denominational church is also warm and welcoming.Walkability: Everyone walks on the island, no cars and great hiking trails.Food & drinks: We couldn’t believe how wonderful the food was at dinner and it’s included in the room fare. Amazing.

We booked our Anniversary Dinner here based on the reviews. We both ordered seafood dishes . Mine came with mashed Yukon potatoes that were far too salty, as were the black rice that accompanied my wife’s seafood medley (lobster was unavailable?)Dessert was equally disappointing. The waitperson came out with five offerings. Two would come with vanilla ice cream. I chose a delicious blueberry pie. Our waitperson returned saying that they did not have vanilla? And would I like to substitute pineapple ice cream with chocolate chunks? On a blueberry pie? They could have gotten vanilla ice cream at the Provisions store. While the seafood was done well, the dinner was not worth the price. We did get a nice seat by the window to watch the sunset. But for my money I would recommend the Trailing Yew.

The owners go out of their way to ensure a pleasant experience. The rooms are simple but comfortable. The in-house breakfast and dinner are excellent.Sitting on the front porch after a long day of hiking was relaxing. No complaints at all. I had a wonderful time.

Lovely Island. The Monhegan House is centrally located to everything. The food was the best I'd had on the island - I tried 5 other places. The accommodations are simple like all the other hotels. I wondered how I'd handle the shared bathrooms and it turned out a lot better than I had anticipated. The owners are hospitable and friendly. Can't wait to go back again next summer.

This hotel is comforting and cute.First of all, the proprietors work really hard and are accommodating whenever possible. The hotel has staff to transport your luggage to and from any ferry that leaves or arrives at the island. The rooms are pretty small, and they’re always hot whenever I’ve stayed there, so keep that in mind. There are shared bathrooms on the first floor (that’s how they refer to the floor above the lobby/game room. The food isn’t great... over the past few years I’ve twice made dinner reservations at the in-house restaurant and been quite disappointed for the prices they charge. I tend to eat at the other establishments around the island for lunch and dinner. Oddly, breakfast at the hotel is pretty decent! Certainly better than most other US hotels I’ve been to in the past couple years...The front porch and the game room are where it’s at. The porch is excellent for some early morning reading. Grab a cup of coffee and go check out the morning... Maybe a cat will come up and snuggle you if you’re lucky! The game room has doors that you can close as it gets past “bedtime” to ensure the other guests aren’t disturbed during a raucous game of Pictionary... The room is well stocked with good group games like Pictionary and Apples to Apples, and they also have other classics like Clue and Scrabble and so forth. There’s even a pair of community binoculars on the shelf in there. All over the hotel you’ll see the work of local artists. Some of it is really lovely, and some of it appears to have been created by children. But it’s not the hotel’s fault that some artists charge as much as they do.Behind the hotel is The Novelty, which is a great little spot to get some yummy food and interesting beers and wine options. For food, the pizza is really good! And the hot wraps are unlike any other wraps I’ve had. After food try some ice cream - flavors tend to rotate each day.Checkout is super early (9:45).

Really enjoyed our stay.Second story room was a little warm but the use of the fan provided by the staff was a huge help. Shared bathroom arrangements worked out better than expected with the selection of several rooms all with locking doors and occupied and unoccupied signs. All and all a very nice 43rd. anniversary weekend for my wife a I.Tom Boudin

The monhegan house is situated in the middle of the village. Right next to the church and Black Duck Emporium. It is right down the road from the store and from the Novelty. The rooms are simple and clean. All the rooms share bath rooms in a common area so just be aware. In general the island is quiet and still but can be very busy during the day. The MoHo is a great place to stay on the island if you want to be close to town.

Average accommodations, nice views, and good food. But the owners and employees were some of the rudest people I've ever met! The owners are only nice to the regulars and are very rude when answering questions. The only exception was our waitress at dinner, she seemed new and was nice. I couldn't help but feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Very sad!

I love the Monhegan House. I have spent a few nights there every summer for the last ten years or so. It's rustic, but I don't mind, as it's affordable. This is an extremely well run establishment with a great restaurant. I'll see it again this summer!

I writing this not even having stayed at the inn - I called to make a reservation and Holden, one of the innkeepers answered the phone. He started off rather brusquely (not a big deal), and then asked "Have you stayed with us before?" It had been awhile since I stayed with them (I stayed when I was a kid), so I said "It's been a while." He retorted with "It's either a yes or no question." From there he asked my name, address, and email address. As I was spelling my email address he said "You could've just said your last name, alright what's next?" Overall, he kept coming back with incredibly rude responses and I was over my interaction with him. I told him he was being rude and I was done trying to book - all he said was "Ok." and hung up. My interpretation of what it's like to stay at Monhegan House? Dismissive, unhelpful, rude, and not worth a second of your time on this beautiful little island.
