We've been working with Heartwood Construction for about four years now. When we purchased our house it was in foreclosure status and a ton of work was needed to make it a comfortable home. Heartwood was not only very accommodating to our requests, but they also gave proper suggestions when it was very evident that I barely knew anything about construction. Apparently, there were many small DIY "projects" that the previous owner decided to take on that were clearly "learning through doing".Throughout the years, Heartwood Construction has:- Removed a sliding glass door (that was installed by cutting into the header beam, causing the roof to bow and a fight just to open the door) and replaced it with two large egress windows along with the rest of the wall and repaired the header- Installed T&G wooden siding on the wall surrounding the egress windows- Replaced all of the plumbing with PEX tubing, prevents pipes from freezing- Spray-foamed insulation the crawlspace, additionally prevents frozen pipes- Removed or arranged the removal of various small structures and large items that were abandoned in our woods before we moved in.- Replaced the air conditioner unit and fixed the central air system- Installed a window frame and found and fixed a major leak in the roof when doing so, no problems since- Installed an ADA compliant ramp and large deck on the front of the house- Arranged plumbers to replace the toilets and a couple faucets- Arranged electricians to make sure all of the outlets are grounded- Installed brand new siding, which included moving the entire back deck and replaced any rotten wood from said deck- Arranged the installation of a home standby generator- A bunch of other things I'm probably forgettingWe've been extremely satisfied with all of Heartwood Construction's hard work and professional expertise. Lonny Anderson is very knowledgeable about his trade and will not hesitate to give you an honest and thorough assessment. He's also quite skilled at seeing what the client has envisioned through the scope of practicality first, then aesthetic. When we've had some pressing matters, Lonny came to the house to assess and got one of his workers to fix the issue within a few hours of discovering the initial problem.I've also hired him to help out my dad with several plumbing/electrician jobs, and requests their aide at the first sign of potential home repair.The staff that works under Lonny are also very courteous and accommodating to the clients and their schedules. Working both inside and outside of the house, they do their best to not be a nuisance to the clients and their neighbors.As far as general pricing goes, they are fair and reasonable for the amount of high-quality work that you can look forward to. You get what you pay for. Since we bought the place in 2018, our property value has almost tripled in value from Heartwood's work, upon general assessment.We have several more projects lined up with them for the next couple of years and will continue to promote them in passing conversation. If anyone needs work done around their house, from small but difficult things to large projects with multiple parts, I highly suggest Heartwood Construction as their go-to.

We used Heartwood for an upstairs remodel in the spring of 2020 to add spray foam insulation to the top floor our 80 year old house to address our chronic ice dam and water intrusion problems. The project had it's share of surprises and unexpected issues, but none were the fault of Heartwood. Lonny was always courteous and professional in helping us through the process, respecting our decisions and providing guidance and recommendations when necessary. I work on the commercial construction side of the building industry and approached the project with an intention to keep the contractor accountable, but it turned out to be unnecessary. Being fairly new to the Duluth area we were unfamiliar with any of the companies that do remodeling. Fortunately, we followed a family recommendation and contacted Heartwood Construction for an estimate. Now, we are more than pleased to also recommend Heartwood. He is organized, consistent, detailed, timely, proactive, and has a positive attitude and great sense of humor. We used Heartwood to replace a door leading from the garage into the house. The project was started sooner than I expected, the guys came over and within a half day it was completed and looked great. When the door was unboxed at my house, there was a very small dent in the front panel. I was fine with it, but Lonny wasn't. He ordered a new door slab, and within days it was replaced. His carpenters were very kind and professional. They all do wonderful work. Heartwood has done a lot of work at our house over the years and we will continue to use them in the future. We can't say enough wonderful things about Heartwood Construction, Lonny, and the whole crew! They are super professional, hard-working, highly skilled, and considerate. They did a fantastic job on our project while taking into account our unique family needs (work schedules, working around pets, pandemic situation, pregnancy/newborn in the house), while going above and beyond to make our house a beautiful, safe and sound home.I had heard about Heartwood from my parents, who had a very positive experience with them a few years back on some storm/ice damage repairs. We decided to call after we had water damage from a storm to our 1893 Victorian. Long story short, our damage ended up being more extensive than we initially thought, and this became a huge project. Lonny worked diligently with our homeowner's insurance company (USAA) to ensure that our claim was correct, that all the damage was repaired, and that our quirky old home would be shored up to prevent future damage. We even added on a couple elective projects to restore our home's Victorian beauty and modernize the kitchen a bit.Our project took a while, but it was worth the wait to get Lonny's precision and expertise working with the insurance company, not to mention the skilled craftsmanship of his team. My wife and I had the opportunity to meet Lonny around late September and in October we signed our contract to have Heartwood Construction finish our basement and build a deck. We could not be happier with the work that Heartwood construction completed. The basement is our favorite part of the house now and the quality of the work stands alone compared to the rest of the house. We moved into a new house in September and while Heartwood finished our basement they even took care of a few existing problems that the original builder had left. I have never trusted a contracting crew more in my house then I did with Heartwood. They were always polite and professional and a joy to be around. Lonny was always very open and upfront about all areas of the project including pricing. We have built two homes and had other work done before and this is the first time that absolutely no surprises showed up downstream of the start date. All promises were fulfilled and no price was changed for the worse. Estimate of project length was almost spot on and we also were kept in loop with the schedule and schedule changes. If we ever have any future house keeping needs we are at ease knowing that we have met such a reliable and great company. Thank you.

We had a new toilet installed by a plumber in our upstairs bath (a different company, not Heartwood), but something went wrong with it and it sprung a leak and poured thousands of gallons of water through our house in a single day. Practically our entire downstairs had to be gutted and the floors throughout most of the upstairs. SERVPRO did the water remediation and we selected Heartwood for the reconstruction of our home. We had some additional updates done while they were there and a squirrel issue arose that they also handled fixing damage from (Guardian handled the actual squirrels). Overall, they oversaw our living room, dining room, downstairs bath and kitchen being completely redone (walls were down to the studs) and the flooring and paint throughout the house.Lonny at Heartwood was excellent to work with. He made sure we understood everything that was going on, kept us appraised of issues and made excellent recommendations regarding our house. Communication was A+++ (which is very important to my husband and I). I felt that he not only worked with us with our insurance claim, but also fought for us to make sure we got a fair replacement for our damaged property. He also broke the process down for us-- asking us to select replacements/colors/etc for things as they were needed instead of requiring it all right away; but provided us a full list up front so we could get to things as we were able.I appreciated Lonny's willingness to work through the scenarios with us; he entertained our ideas and gave us quotes and opinions when we asked for them. Every time we stopped by the house, all of the workers who were there (whether from Heartwood or a company working with them) were polite, helpful and friendly. For a bad, stressful situation; it was as good as I could have ever imagined it. We're back in our house now and happy with all the work done. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Heartwood to anyone.

Heartwood remodeled the kitchen in our 1870's-built house in Duluth. The kitchen was part of a poorly-built addition that was crooked and needed a lot of structural work. Now it is not only a beautiful and functional kitchen, but also the most square and level room in our house. Lonny communicated well at every step of the process, presented us with options when things didn't go exactly as planned, and really listened to our needs and desired use of the space. My story with Heartwood-September 2011, my family experienced a house fire. 3 kids, 1 dog and a cat all made it out alive. The stress began. We needed to rebuild our home; I was placed in contact with Heartwood Construction and specifically, Lonny Anderson. Lonny made a rather quick trip to my families home and gathered the appropriate people to inspect the remains of my families home. He left my husband and me with an at ease feeling. Lonny had this under control. From day one, Lonny gave us a realistic time of frame between 4-6 months once they started. From the time Lonny's crew was allowed to start and when they finished was just shy of 4 months. His crew, Al and Mike were at my house most often and we had so much fun with these guys. They were beyond personable and dare I say; delightful?Working with Lonny was as I most often described to friends and family, "A breath of fresh air." Lonny is a rather laid back guy with a great sense of humor. He handled my needs in a very short time. Never ignored a single issue I had along the way. I have read a few reviews that state, "Yeah he is a nice guy, they do good work." Those types of reviews do not give these guys the credit they deserve. I have submitted some before the fire and after the fire photos. I was beyond happy to move home, I also knew that it would end my relationship with Al, Mike and Lonny. I will miss those guys. Really, take the time to meet Lonny, you will see what I am talking about. My home is beautiful. Thanks Heartwood!

Lonny is very knowledgeable about all different types of construction which was a huge benefit to us as our timber frame house was damaged by trees in a windstorm. His knowledge of construction was an asset dealing with the insurance company. You won’t find a more capable, honest contractor. Also, his crew is extremely talented, and pleasant to work with. Had our roof replaced by Heartwood approximately 4 years ago. During our last current "storm" we lost quite a few shingles that blew off the roof. It was pretty windy, but nothing too abnormal for the area we live in. Yes, we had also paid for an extended warranty on our roof. We were told the warranty isn't covered due to the "strong winds". If there were such "strong winds" I would suspect our neighbors and others would have had shingles laying scattered all over their yards and driveway's as well. We didn't see any, and we probably have one of the newest roofs in the neighborhood. Heartwood came out and "fixed" the roof, but we also received a bill in the mail for this fix, which in my mind any good respectable company would have taken care of this and stood by their work. Please keep this in mind when deciding on a company for replacing your roof.Update. Heartwood did take care of the shingles and sent our check back to us. Thank you Heartwood for standing by your work.

They currently are not making estimates or scheduling any estimates. They wanted me to call them in 6-8 weeks to schedule an estimate. I don't have any faith that if I were to actually call them in 6-8 weeks that they would be willing to schedule an estimate and that they would then want me to wait another 6-8 weeks to do the work we are getting done.They clearly don't know how to use a calendar to make a schedule.
