Keep an eye on the amount your credit card is charged versus what your receipt says. My oil delivery came from Long Valley Oil which seems to be owned by Hewitt. Understandably, there’s a price difference between ordering under and over 200 gallons, however, my tank needed over 200 gallons yet the driver only gave 177, which filled my tank to just above 3/4. Clearly there was room for more oil in the tank. And since I was under 200 gallons I was charged the higher price per gallon but nowhere on the receipt did it state that higher price per gallon. It wasn’t until I noticed my credit card had a higher charge than the receipt that I placed a call and found out. I was told the extra amount is on my account as a credit. What? Why a credit if that extra amount was really due and payable? So they charge a higher price but don’t actually put it through as a sale, just an extra charge to customers that is held as a credit, then I’m guessing eventually they wipe the credit from their books if a customer never discovers it. PS I was a staff accountant and know how this works. I was able to get it refunded but I’m not positive if this happened to me other times I used the company, and if so, I never noticed the higher charge just because I trusted what was on my receipt and never compared it to my credit card statement. This is a deceptive practice and it should be noted on the receipt for customers. And also, I’d suggest mailing customers statements so that they’re aware they have credits on their accounts. Otherwise, it really just looks as if you’re hiding these credits from your customers.
