And their designs were much more creative than the other contractors. Pete (foreman) did an amazing job of keeping everything on schedule and keeping us informed of the progress every day. I really can’t say enough about the fantastic job that FSBD did on my outdoor deck and patio project. My first introduction to the company was Joe who came out to talk about my project. I found Joe to be knowledgeable and great to consult with about options to make our vision come to life. Once the project kicked off, the on-site team, from carpentry (Tom & Riley), to masonry were fantastic. The guys worked diligently, and made very little noise or mess. Exceeded my expectations by so much! From the very first interaction with the Admin Assistant when we scheduled our deck, to our Sales Representative (CJ) to the very end with John. This entire experience has been one of the best experiences we've ever had with a contractor company. When my wife and I found our house, we needed to have our forty-five-year-old deck replaced because it was dry rotted and falling apart. We also happened to see a location on the existing deck where we thought it would be wonderful to put a sunroom. My wife grew up with an enclosed porch and when we connected, that was where we spent a lot of our time together.We actually found another contractor right before settlement with our house, but after more than a year, we decided to let him go due to unprofessionalism. Then we searched for a while and went through numerous contractors. A lot of them were inflating the number and coming back with different quotes, etc. Some also just couldn’t do the job.Then we found First State Building and Design. First we were greeted by Rand, the estimator, who worked with us from the first time he came out to our house and gave us an estimate close to our initial price range. Then he had us brought to the showroom, made changes to the initial proposal and kept us updated along the way.Right before the construction began, we met Pete, the project manager, who came out to our house and gave us an overview of the schedule as well as providing the location of where the material, trailer, dumpster and porta potty would go. Pete and I had a productive review of the work performed at the end of the project and I could tell he really valued my feedback.After the project began, we met Ervin, the main builder, who would be their everyday working on our deck and sunroom. It was an absolute pleasure to work with him and his brother. I can’t say this enough. Make sure you ask for them if you use this company. They were the highlight of this project for me (and they should be because you see them almost everyday). They communicated, were friendly and made small cosmetic designs for us along the way. They were even playing football out in the street during their lunch.Towards the end, I met Joe in-person, the owner, who spoke to me about the entirety of the job and how he had a major part with the project plans in the early stages. He also went over a future project of ours that my wife and I are going to do in the coming years. He provided me an estimated quote and was very helpful with breaking it down for me.The last thing to be finished was to have Matt come out to our house and seed the grass that had to be removed when the project began. Matt spoke to me over the phone and explained to me the process of how to maintain the grass (water, fertilizer, etc). He answered all of my questions and even put a little extra top soil in some extra holes for us.Probably the best piece of advice though I could give away to anyone reading this review would be to ask questions. Ask, ask, ask questions! Ask about the electrical outlets and circuit breakers, ask about insulation, ask about the caulking, ask about any credit that’s due and ask to make sure the job is finished before submitting the final invoice. Ask every question you can think of no matter how annoying it may seem to you and the contractor. It’s your money and any good company will answer and accommodate it if there was a miscommunication along the way.Overall, I am very very pleased with First State Building and Design. They quite literally took me through every step of the process and took the legwork out of it for my wife and I. They are quite professional and I would use them again for other major construction needs. I can honestly say they completed every single request of mine during the entirety of the project. And I mean every single request. I am truly satisfied with the work performed by them.Thank you First State Building and Design for completing our dream project.

After falling through my deck I decided it was time to replace it. I looked into several contractors and decided to go with FSBD.They did an excellent job. We had Dave and Ed as our lead carpenters, they went above and beyond. They put up a temporary ramp in the front of our house so my mom could get in and out while the build was going on. They also made a nice cover for our oil fill pipe and cut the deck so it fit perfectly against the stone wall of out house. I would definitely would recommend for your project.

We recently contracted FSBD to install a 40' tall custom safety net that spanned nearly 300' behind one of our baseball fields.Joe and Matt were both great to work with from beginning to end. They worked with multiple vendors to ensure this was done the right way. This company is "First class" and we'd use them again in a heartbeat. I truly can't say enough good about FSBD. I arrived not knowing what I wanted beyond knowing I had to have my deck replaced and came away with a gorgeous deck/piece of art all designed and built by FSBD.Everyone was a pleasure to work with and patient beyond words as I am not a person who can visualize things. The design had to be explained to me (more than once) and each person was knowledgeable, friendly and more than competent in executing their part of the job.I loved the work so much, they are already on my mental schedule to have another job done as soon as possible.I hope that FSBD is able to post a picture or video of the final deck because I don't have a picture that does it justice. It's a second story deck with curved decking and railings, going around three sides of my house with a spiral staircase going down to a pre-existing fire pit area. Just got some pictures to share -- now you can appreciate the beauty of the final product.I do not think you could be disappointed if you chose to have FSBD do your next project!

We recently had a complete exterior renovation performed on our home by FSBD. I think every service that FSBD provides was utilized for our renovation. We had a large wrap around deck installed, a new entry, new Hardy siding and windows installed. Under the back deck we decided to build a functional dry room.The workmanship was of the highest quality and the crews were easy to work with. FSBD employees a top-notch design team which is foundational for the crews to work. In addition, the project is assigned a project lead who ensures everything is done correctly and on time (much appreciated). High quality materials were used throughout and the specialized trades such as the trim carpenter and stone masons are true masters.We love to spend time on the deck experiencing the forest and grilling. FSBD did an amazing job transforming our "out-dated" sunroom into a beautiful outdoor covered patio/deck. From start to finish, their customer service was excellent and the overall build is professionally done & accurate.Joe, our sales person and main point of contact, was very thorough throughout the entire design process and an excellent communicator. He offered recommendations where needed, and answered all of our questions in a timely manner. From our first conversation with Joe, we knew he had a high level of expertise and made it easy for us to trust him & the team with the job.Pete, our Project Manager, was also a great communicator and kept my wife & I informed each step of the way during the demo & build.FSBD contracted out the carpenters, roofers, and electricians - which was communicated initially by Joe - and they all were efficient and accurate with their work. From demo to project completion - our patio/deck was built in ~4.5 weeks.Overall, we are very satisfied with FSBD & would definitely use them for future home improvement projects.Our only constructive feedback is that the BuilderTrend site they use to track progress, make payments, etc. had an inaccurate timeline. However, as noted, Pete kept us up to date on the progress & next steps so it was not a big deal to us.We would recommend FSBD to anyone!

Highly recommend FSBD. Owner and staff were all a pleasure to work with. If there were any questions or concerns they were always available to answer. We hired FSBD to build an open front porch on our colonial style house that needed some character. We wanted it to look up to date, with a modern farmhouse look. We also had them build a trellis over the garage doors and install a new front door. We were very happy with how it turned out and decided to have FSBD do our “Phase 2” construction; Hardy Board siding, windows, back door and French door. We could not be happier that they made our vision a reality! Let me first say I don’t leave reviews often, hardly ever, but the job done here deserves high praises.Take a look at the photos: my old stairs were old, beat, busted, not at all up to any codes, and falling apart. Only I knew which steps to use that were ‘safe’. I could pay out the nose to get them repaired, but once repaired, they would still need yearly maintenance (something that has hung over our heads since the late 70s when my family bought the house -that’s 40+ years of yearly scraping and painting!!) and, sadly, still be out of compliance with housing codes. It was a wreck. I was a wreck! And I’m getting up in years and it’s not as easy to do that maintenance anymore, not that it was EVER easy, honestly. My upstairs were unusable, as those stairs are the only way in and out. I was beside myself.But then …FSBD to the rescue! Just look at those new stairs! They’re sturdy and solid and up to all the standards they need to be. And I’ll never need to scrape and paint them -EVER!! An occasional spray to knock any dirt off and they’re good to go. Heck, the stairs look better than my house does at this point. I need to up my house game now!The crew they sent: Dave, Edward, and Matt were phenomenal, starting each day good and early and working through the job daily until completion. I can’t imagine a better crew to tackle the monster job that this was. They sent the best. These guys are the A-Team!! A great bunch of guys, personable, totally professional, and they must be constructing gurus by the result. I mean, seriously …just LOOK at those steps! 👀It wasn’t cheap, I’m not going to lie. It cost a BUNDLE! But you get what you pay for! I paid for the old ones to be torn out and professional quality stairs installed that I’ll never have to deal with scraping and painting and that’s what I got. Maybe more importantly, I now have some peace of mind.When shopping around to replace, I looked into more metal, into wood, but I chose to go with FSBD and their composite materials over everything else because it has a good long life, has some slip- resistance (the metal stairs? 0% slip resistance!) and believe it or not, it was STILL cheaper than if I had chosen to repair the metal. Crazy, right?!So to sum it up: am I happy? Oh, HELL yes! Would I recommend them? I already have! And once the dust in my bank account settles, I plan on coming back to have them fix those ugly/funky steps you see at the back door, too! Once that’s better, there’s the matter of the front steps, too …it might could use a nicer porch, I’m thinking.. 🤔On the fence about FSBD? Don’t be. You’re in good hands with this place. They treated me extremely well and I’d imagine they’ll deal with you in the same professional manner. And in the end you’ll have a new set of stairs (or porch or pool or …whatever you’re having fixed or installed) like I have!And you’ll glad you did! 😃

The end result of our project was beautiful, well crafted and exactly what we wanted. The sub contractors did a fantastic job and the project manager was a pleasure to work with. Only gave four stars because we had a dispute with the company over the design of the stairs. While the design of the stairs was in the approved blueprints, it was not what was originally discussed, poorly called out in the blueprints and the change never communicated outright by the sales manager. Not only was the design a safety hazard for my small children and dogs, what had been executed to that point was off centered. While the company did correct the issue and ultimately executed to our original expectations, it was not without headache and a lot of back and forth discussions. I would advise all considering customers, to carefully review all designs for consistency and ask questions beyond annoyance.Services: Patio decks, Pergola construction

We had an excellent experience with FSBD adding a screen porch to our home. The porch is beautiful and complements the house - it looks like it could have always been there. FSBD built it in the estimated time-frame and accommodated a couple of changes with electrical and with the siding that we didn't realize that we wanted until we got to that point in the project. Our project managers were in daily communication and the company President, Joe, touched base with us weekly. I was impressed with the level of communication because while this was a huge project for us, it is a smaller project for a construction company, but FSBD brought a high level of detail and care to the project. Finally, the construction crew were on time, cleaned the site every day, answered questions if we had them, and were generally just pleasant to be around, which made the process easier. Thanks to the whole team at FSBD, including Rand who got us started and all the people who worked on the project that we never met. We are very pleased with our new porch!

I had a small screened in porch that I wanted to turn into a three season room so that I could get more use out of the space. I wanted windows that opened as much as possible. I contacted First State Building and Design, and they showed me the Sunscape brand of windows that open 75% for maximum airflow. The windows also hold in heat when closed so you can use the room in early spring and fall with a small heater. I purchased the matching door with the windows. First State Building was excellent to work with and very responsive. The measurements were perfect. I am glad I made the renovation decision.Service: Porch construction
