BUYER BEWARE of Blue Ribbon Roofing LLC, McKinney, TX. The owner, John Hopkins, has operated under several different business names: Signature Roofing, Bold Renovations (and variations thereof, ie Bold Roofing), and most recently Blue Ribbon Roofing, who sold me my TPO roof in January, 2018.I have an architecturally significant home with a series of flat roof lines. I contracted Blue Ribbon to replace the existing roof with a Firestone product. Blue Ribbon, instead, installed a different product by Carlisle. They also installed new coping, and retro-fitted (3) skylights. John Hopkins did not inform me of the product change, file a city permit, or provide the subcontractor’s installation license for the installed product Carlisle manufacturer. He said the project would take two days, it took 6 days, and they disconnected my DirectTV, did not pay to reinstall. At the end of the install and final cash payment, John Hopkins assured me all the drains had been address and cleared, trees would be trimmed, and the installer would remove all the trash, clean the site.My roof began to show leaks 4 weeks later, in late February, 2018. I had three flat tires from improper site cleaning (nails in tires). Trees were hanging over roof drains and rubbing against the home, and the workmen unplugged my sprinklers without reconnecting. None of the old caulking had been removed and resealed around the perimeter flashing of all exterior walls, and all the coping had been screwed on the top. The installer did not use the standard clipping system or wood blocking at the top of the parapet walls. Water was pooling, and not reaching clogged drains.In April, Blue Ribbon Roofing cleared the drains, replaced two of the three skylights, replaced vents, and caulked over existing caulk. In May, as they painted the interior water damage, other leaks were detected in the living room, and master bath and closet. Blue Ribbon did not address any of these new leaks by the end of that week. I called the contact number on his insurance certificate that is posted on his social media. The number was disconnected. I sent an email, no response. John gave me the brokers correct cell number, but he no longer represents Blue Ribbon.June, 2018, I hired an independent roof inspector who documented 13 deficiencies in the installation. I had 12 additional issues, including interior water and possible electrical damage. In July, 2018, I made a final attempt for Blue Ribbon to honor their install and warranty. However, my roof continued to leak. After weeks of negotiating, delayed starts dates due to documentation issues and expenses payments, we signed a second contract. It took two inspections for the repairs to be finalized. Blue Ribbon has yet to provide valid proof of insurance. It took eight plus months to get my home to pass a roof inspection, preventing me from selling my home in an aggressive market.

This was 2 1/2 years ago. It took at least 25+ failed no show appointments and 8 months before I could get them back out to repair the obvious mistakes from the roofing crew. The mistakes were not an accident, but sheer incompetence from a roofing crew that didn't care about things being done correctly. Pure persistence was the only way I could them to return and fix their "workmanship". Don't use these guys unless you want a 1 star experience.

I can not express the time we spent looking for a professional HONEST roofing company. John was very quick to inspect my roof. He helped me with the HOA , which was a big relief. His crew came out and got my new roof on in one day. The roofers did a top notch job in this texas heat . The clean up was amazing . At one point I looked out the window and saw they covered my pool. That showed me respect. John came out the next day to make sure everything was done and done right. We recently purchased a new home. We had an issue with a vent on the roof. I called the former owner and they said they thought they used Blue Ribbon. I called Blue Ribbon to ask if they could cover a repair related to warranty. They immediately said they would. They came to our home and found out that it wasn't their roof. They had put another roof on another home. Then they proceeded to do all the work anyway... for free! Tish and the team (Juan) were incredibly helpful. They will be my first call next time I need roof work.

This company installed a new roof on my flat-roof house in January 2018. A month later, I began to notice leaks in areas of the house where leaking had not occurred in the past. There were 13 roof installation deficiencies confirmed by an independent Inspector. It took eight months and multiple phone calls to Blue Ribbon Roofing before all of these errors were repaired. Because of the subpar roof job, I decided to file a claim with Blue Ribbon Roofing’s general liability carrier. When I spoke with their insurance agent, I was told the policy was cancelled and that the carrier may not pick up the claim because the roofing company failed to comply with insurance policy guidelines.

From the initial estimate to the end of the project, Blue Ribbon was truly amazing to work with. The owner personally came to look at the roof and give me an estimate. I purchased a home in McKinney last September that Blue Ribbon Roofing replaced the roof a couple years ago. When I moved in I noticed a leak from a pipe and contacted the owner John and was told he would send someone out to look at it. 2 weeks later I contacted John as no one had come to repair the leak. He said he thought someone had come out and repaired it and would check and call me back. Never heard back and no one showed up. 2 weeks go by and I called again and he again thought it had been fixed, why then is it still leaking? A month and a half go by and no word. I finally hired another local roofing company who sent someone out in 2 days and fixed it. I was told the pipe was installed improperly causing the leak. I paid $300.00 and was happy to have it fixed. I again reached out to John the end of December and informed him and he said he would drop off a check to reimburse me. 3 weeks later, no check, he again promised to get me a check. Nothing to date. The recent storm damaged my roof and my insurance paid for a replacement which I have awarded another company. Avoid the company by all means, not to be trusted!!! Makes lots of promises but never came thru.

Of course after a hail storm there are MANY roofing companies that come by. It's hard to tell who is honest, who will do a good job, and who is a real company and not just a storm chasing company. I was impressed with Blue Ribbon from the inspection/quote, the work, and everything that had to go through with insurance. They made it easy on me to do something I was dreading for a while. I'd definitely use them again in the future(hopefully won't need it anytime soon).

Be aware before choosing this company that there are multiple complaints against it. I was uninformed, to my own peril, and I fell prey to the terrible business practices of the owner, John Hopkins.He did not complete my job and left multiple items that my insurance company paid for undone. He claims he did it so I wouldn't have to pay my deductible, which I think may be unethical at the very least. I did not ask him to do that, I planned on paying the deductible and having the entire job done correctly. He has not responded to requests for my money no matter how many times I have tried to get it back.He is dishonest as the day is long, and here I sit with my list of unfinished jobs and I don't have MY money to pay to have them done. The money he has kept obviously not only "covered" my deductible, but also thousands of dollars more.If you read the reviews here you will see that he has had to start a number of companies with different names to get away from lawsuits and complaints.Do your homework and read reviews carefully before choosing to get a roofing job done on your home. I learned my lesson, and if the others that have been swindled would like to file a class action lawsuit I will be happy to join together with you to try and re-gain the money. Do not use Blue Ribbon Roofing or John Hopkins and save yourself a load of frustration.

I would steer clear of Blue Ribbon Roofing. I looked into them myself after speaking with the owner, John Hopkins, about roof repairs. I had also seen their name as a sponsor for a local event as well as a volley of advertisements around town, so initially they seemed reputable. However after doing some basic digging I found that the owner has operated under several different business names: Signature Roofing, Bold Renovations (and variations thereof, ie Bold Roofing), and most recently Blue Ribbon Roofing. That was the first red flag. So I looked into his various roofing companies a little more closely. Quick searches of public databases show poor BBB ratings and numerous complaints from former customers for failure to complete work, improperly completed work, taking money and never doing any work, and failing to return money. Looked a little more and found civil lawsuits against him and/or his various businesses in Collin county, Dallas county, as well as in Oklahoma. Several of them appeared to end in judgements against him. This is all easily verifiable public information. I even came across someone's home security video on YouTube that claims to be of Hopkins stealing another roofer's yard sign; not sure how they confirmed it was him but it sure does look like it is him and his rather unique Dodge truck. With that much negative information found based on just a quick search of public sources it does not seem like an owner or company to trust with your money or home repairs. I was fortunate enough to be able to pull out of the deal before I lost any money.
