My wife and I were looking for a place to retire in the Northwest when we made a stop in Friday Harbor to visit some friends. Not only did we fall in love with the island we also loved our friend’s new house. Peter Schmidt was their building contractor. I have previously worked with 4 different building contractors to build 4 new homes for our family in a span of 40 years. This has given me perspective as to what to look for in a good contractor. First and foremost I could see the finished product in our friends’ home. The quality of the construction was true and plumb. The application of the materials was well applied. We were just flat out impressed with the quality of the workmanship.We secured a piece of property and hired Peter to build a guesthouse/shop based on the finished product of our friends’ house and their recommendation. He was able to draft our house plans based on rudimentary sketches of a floor plan we gave him. He listened to what we wanted and presented options and gave opinions as needed based on his experience and knowledge of the area and building codes.We had such a good experience with the first build we hired Peter again to build our house 2 years later. He drafted the plans using CAD from our sketches. He completed the construction to a dried-in shell and allowed us to continue finishing the work inside with our selection of subcontractors often referred by him. Through this finishing process several of these subcontractors from on and off the island have made comments on the high quality of the construction and materials always wanting to know who did the work.We’ve had a successful and enjoyable experience working with Peter, his wife, Brenda, and family, along with his highly skilled workers. We’ve also witnessed and even experienced his generous and giving spirit. We highly recommend him and his company without any hesitation!
